"IF THESE TWO GREAT COUNTRIES DO NOT HANG TOGETHER"

AMBASSADOR HARVEY SAYS THERE IS NOTHING MORE FOR HIM TO DO IN THE UK

Southampton, England (JFK+50) On November 3, 1923, George Harvey*, United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, sailed for New York City on the Aquitania.

Before departure, the Ambassador said to reporters...

"There is nothing left for me to do here.  It is better that I should go home and work for the great cause of British-American friendship.  If these two great countries do not hang together there is nothing left for the world..."

*George Harvey (1864-1928) was born in Peacham, Vermont & served as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom 1921-1923.

"WILL STAY IN ENGLAND 'UNTIL I AM FINISHED"

AMBASSADOR HARVEY RETURNS TO POST IN ENGLAND

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 8, 1923, United States Ambassador to the court of St. James, George Harvey*, sailed on the Leviathan to return to his post.  Before departure, Mr. Harvey declared he would be staying in England "until I am finished."

The ambassador is accompanied by Will H. Hayes, president of the Motion Picture Producers & Distributors.  Mr. Harvey denies any intention of returning to the United States to take charge of President Calvin Coolidge's presidential campaign.

*George Brinton McClellan Harvey (1864-1928) was born in Peacham, Vermont and became managing editor of the New York World.  GBMH purchased Harper's Weekly & Metropolitan Magazine.  He served as US ambassador to U.K., 1921-1923.

"EUROPE FACES MOST DESPAIRING OUTLOOK IN HISTORY"

AMBASSADOR HARVEY HOPES EUROPEAN ECONOMIC CONDITIONS CAN BE SETTLED

London (JFK+50) On December 5, 1922, the New York Herald published an Associated Press story reporting that Ambassador George Harvey*, speaking the previous evening at the American Circle of the Lyceum Club** here in London, said Europe is facing "the most despairing outlook in history."

The Ambassador remains hopeful, however, that European economic conditions can be settled at the meeting of the Premiers to be held in London "preparatory to the Brussels conference."

Ambassador Harvey added...

"There must be an immediate adjustment of conditions in the minor countries."

*George Brinton McClellan Harvey (1864-1928) born in Peacham, Vermont became a journalist, author, streetcar magnate & magazine editor.  As a conservative Democrat, ABMH was adviser to Gov Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey.  He served as ambassador to UK 1921-1923.

**Lyceum Club, a women's organization, founded 1903 by Constance Smedley in London, to promote literature, journalism, art, science & medicine.
