SHOREHAM TO CLOSE AT MONTH'S END; BUILDING GOES UP FOR SALE MAY 25

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 19, 1926, The Evening Star reports that the Shoreham Hotel* here in the Nation's Capital "will close its doors at the end of the...month."

The furniture and other contents of the hotel are to be sold.  The building itself is advertised to go up for sale as of May 25, 1926.  A reason given by The Star for the sale is "the approaching dull Summer season."

*The Shoreham Hotel, located at 15th & H Streets in Washington, D.C., was built in 1887 by Levi P. Morton who named the hotel for his birthplace, Shoreham, Vermont.  The hotel went bankrupt in 1927 & was sold to a developer who had it demolished in 1929.

Levi Parsons Morton (1824-1920) served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1879-1881, as minister to France 1881-1885, VPOTUS 1889-1893 & governor of New York 1895-1896.

I WANT IT UNDERSTOOD I AM THE GRANDSON OF NOBODY

BENJAMIN HARRISON BORN IN OHIO 

North Bend, Ohio (JFK+50) On August 20, 1833, Benjamin Harrison, the future 23rd POTUS and grandson of  William Henry Harrison, the 9th POTUS, was born here in North Bend*.

The Harrisons were among the First Families of Virginia having arrived in Jamestown in 1630.  Young Benjamin attended Farmers College in 1847 and graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1852.  He studied law in Cincinnati and joined the Republican Party in 1856.  During the Civil War, Harrison rose from 2nd Lt. to Brigadier General in the Union Army.

Having lost bids for governor of Ohio in 1872 and 1876, Benjamin Harrison was elected to the United States Senate and served from 1881 to 1887.  In 1888, he won the Republican nomination for president and chose Levi P. Morton** as his running mate.

Although losing the popular vote by 90,000, Harrison became president-elect by virtue of a 233 to 168 electoral college victory over incumbent President Grover Cleveland.

*North Bend, Ohio is located in Hamilton County on the banks of the Ohio River.  15 miles from Cincinnati and 6 miles from the Ohio-Indiana state line, the area was settled by John Cleves Symmes in 1789.  NB is one of only two towns in America that is the birthplace of two presidents, the other being Quincy, MA.

**Levi Parsons Morton (1824-1920) was born in Shoreham, VT & served as US Ambassador to France, Governor of New York (1895-1896) & Vice-President of the US (1889-1893).
