COOLIDGE NOMINATION ACCEPTANCE SPEECH TO BE BROADCAST OVER RADIO

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 13, 1924, The Evening Star reports that President Calvin Coolidge's presidential nomination acceptance speech will be "broadcast tomorrow night from Memorial Continental Hall" located here in the Nation's Capital.

The broadcast will be played on a radio loudspeaker at the First Congregational Church* where the First Couple attend.

WCAP will broadcast the speech locally while other Eastern radio stations carrying the signal will be WEAF, New York, WJAR, Providence, KDKA, Pittsburgh, & WGY Schenectady.

*DC congregationalists, identified with northern abolitionism, held their 1st service in 1865.  The original church building, nearly 90 years old, was declared unsafe in the 1950s.

"LAUDS CRUSADE OF TRUE AMERICANISM"

PRESIDENT HARDING ADDRESSES ASSEMBLED D.A.R. DELEGATES AT CONTINENTAL HALL

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 16, 1923, President Warren G. Harding addressed the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution* meeting at Memorial Continental Hall** here in the Nation's Capital.

According to the Evening Star, the President declared "the world today faces difficulties on a larger scale and a more varied nature than ever before."

The President also paid tribute to the assembled D.A.R. delegates by saying...

"Our country will have done well if it is assured of the full enlistment of all the unselfish devotion of its womanhood in the supreme duty of implanting sentiments of real Americanism in the hearts of our citizens."

*NSDAR was founded in 1890 with a mission of promoting historic preservation, education & patriotism.  It has had 1 million members admitted since 1890.

**Memorial Continental Hall was completed in 1910 & was the site of the 1922 Washington Naval Conference as well as headquarters of the D.A.R.  Constitution Hall, also located at 1776 D. Street NW, opened in 1929 to house the annual DAR convention.

"THEY ARE ENEMIES FIRST OF THEIR OWN COUNTRY"

SECRETARY HUGHES CRITICAL OF THOSE WHO DECRY FOREIGN PEOPLES & THEIR GOVERNMENTS

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On the evening of April 17, 1922, Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes, in address to the Daughters of the American Revolution* Congress meeting here in the Nation's Capital, said...

"The true significance of the recent armament conference is...that there never has been manifested a finer spirit of international co-operation..."

The Secretary thanked the DAR for making the Memorial Continental Hall* available for conference meetings.

Mr. Hughes continued...

"Let it be understood that those who indulge in diatribes against foreign peoples and their governments...are enemies first of their own country."

*Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) was founded in 1890 in Washington, D.C.  It is a service organization for women directly descended from a person involved in the American movement for independence from Great Britain in the 18th century.

**Continental Hall is located at 1776 D Street, NW in Washington, D.C. It was built 1904-1910 & opened in 1921.   The hall was the site of the Washington Naval Conference, 1921-22.  It is part of the headquarters complex of the DAR.
