U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HOLDS FIRST MEETING

New York City (JFK+50) Two hundred and twenty-seven years ago today, April 1, 1789, the United States House of Representatives held its first full meeting here in New York.

Frederick Muhlenberg* of Pennsylvania was elected the first Speaker of the House.

*Frederick Muhlenberg (1750-1801) was born in Trappe, PA.  His father was a German immigrant & Lutheran pastor.  FM attended the University of Halle at Wittenberg and was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1770.

FM served as a member of the Continental Congress in 1779 & 1780 and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 1780-83.  He served as both the 1st and 3rd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Dodgeville, Wisconsin (JFK+50) Senator John F. Kennedy, campaigning for President fifty six years ago today, warned of a... "powerful....dangerous and growing...organized criminal syndicate operating in America."

JFK called for the establishment of a permanent "National Crime Commission" which would "investigate and gather information" about underworld activities and report it to local authorities.

JFK SENDS MESSAGE TO ASIAN EDUCATION MINISTERS

Tokyo, Japan (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy sent a message 53 years ago today, April 1, 1961, to Asian education ministers meeting here in Tokyo.

He said in the message that Americans,,,

"share (your) vision of the revolutionary role which education can play in building strong, free and independent nations."

SOVIET TROOPS STOP TRAINS IN BERLIN

Berlin (JFK+50) Troops of the Soviet Union stopped US military trains 66 years ago today, April 1, 1948, that were traveling through the Russian zone of occupation here in Berlin.

Cold War tensions were high as this occupied city of Germany was divided into British, American, Russian and French zones of occupation.

The Soviets later attempted, unsuccessfully, to blockade the free section of Berlin which was surrounded by communist territory in June 1948.

HITLER SENT TO PRISON 90 YEARS AGO TODAY

Landsberg, Germany (JFK+50) It was no April Fools Day joke for the future Fuhrer of Nazi Germany when 90 years ago today, April 1, 1924, Adolf Hitler was arrested and sentenced to prison here in Landsberg for his role in the unsuccessful "Beer Hall Putsch".

The attempt to take over the government failed and Hitler would pay the price for treason. 

The prison stay was brief, however, for such a major crime.  Hitler was released after nine months.

It was during his prison stay that Hitler wrote "Mein Kampf."

KENNEDYS TAKE A TOUR OF GETTYSBURG


JFK , Mrs. Kennedy & Caroline were taken on a tour of the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania yesterday by National Park Service historian Jacob Sheads.


Along with the 1st Family for the tour were Mr. & Mrs. Paul Fay & their children.


The group drove up from Camp David, Maryland.


Mr. Sheads took the Presidential party on a tour of the battlefield's highlights including Devil's Den, Little Round Top, Seminary Ridge and the Wheatfield.
