NIXON ANNOUNCED PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDACY 50 YEARS AGO TODAY
Manchester, New Hampshire (JFK+50) Richard M. Nixon officially announced his candidacy for the 1968 Republican nomination for President of the United States fifty years ago, February 1, 1968.
According to Conrad Black, the former Vice-President's campaign organization was "in place" and had mailed out 50,000 letters here in the state of New Hampshire with the "unsurprising news that he was...in the quest for the Republican nomination."
Mr. Nixon emphasized his political experience and said that he had reflected over the past eight years on the lessons of public office and had "found some answers."
When the campaign was officially launched on February 3rd, Richard Nixon said...
"When the strongest nation in the world can be tied down for four years in Vietnam with no end in sight, when the nation with the greatest tradition of responsibility for the rule of law is plagued by random lawlessness, when the nation that has been a symbol of human liberty has been torn apart by racial strife, when the POTUS cannot tour...without fear of a hostile demonstration, then it it is time America had new leadership."
James Rogan, who describes Nixon as "a man wholly gifted, wholly flawed wholly undaunted and wholly American," writes...
"During the next six months, Nixon ran the gauntlet of the other major (Republican) contenders (Romney, Rockefeller & Reagan)."
After having been narrowly defeated by JFK in 1960 and losing a bid for governor of California in 1962, Richard M. Nixon began 50 years ago today what has been called the greatest political comeback in history.
RMN defeated Hubert H. Humphrey in November 1968 and was sworn-in as the 37th POTUS on January 20, 1969. Although re-elected by an overwhelming majority in 1972, President Nixon resigned his office as a result of the Watergate scandal in 1974.
