BUREAU OF OUTDOOR RECREATION PLANNED RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNTIES

OUTDOOR RECREATION ACT SIGNED

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 28, 1963, President John F. Kennedy, whose family was known for the love of the outdoors, signed into law the Outdoor Recreation Act.

President Kennedy said...

"This legislation will enable the Department of Interior through its newly formed Bureau of Outdoor Recreation* to undertake the planning, research and coordination  tasks outlined by the Outdoor Resources Review Commission..."

The President also called for passage of the Land and Water Conservation Fund to permit those benefiting from the Nation's outdoor resources to help acquire land and water areas need for future use.

*Bureau of Outdoor Recreation was an agency of the Interior Department which planned recreational opportunities & assisted various organizations with recreation planning.  The BOR was founded in April 1962.  Its functions were transferred from the National Park Service, but in 1977 the BOR was absorbed into the Heritage Conservation & Recreation Service.

OUTDOOR RECREATION BILL

JFK SIGNED OUTDOOR RECREATION BILL 52 YEARS AGO 

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) Fifty-two years ago today, May 28, 1963, President John F. Kennedy, whose family has a history of the love of the outdoors, signed into law the Outdoor Recreation Act of 1963.

President Kennedy said...

RFK UPSET BY McCARTHY IN OREGON PRIMARY

Salem, Oregon (JFK+50) Forty-seven years ago today, May 28 1968, New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy's campaign for the 1968 Democratic nomination for President of the United States took a hit when Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota defeated him in the Oregon primary.

McCarthy, whose surprise showing in the New Hampshire primary earlier led President Lyndon B. Johnson to drop out of contention, polled 163,990 to RFK's 141,631.

VW FOUNDED IN WOLFSBURG

Wolfsburg, Germany (JFK+50) Seventy-eight years ago today, May 28, 1937, Volkswagen was founded here in Wolfsburg.

Adolf Hitler had promised the German people "a car for the broad masses....to answer their transportation needs."

The beginning of WWII in 1939 shut down production of "The People's Car" but 20 years later VW's "Beetle" became the #1 import car in the USA.
