PRESIDENT NIXON ANNOUNCES END OF VIETNAM WAR

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On January 23, 1973, President Richard M. Nixon announced that Secretary of State Henry Kissinger* and North Vietnamese envoy Le Duc Tho** had agreed to "end the war (in Vietnam) and bring peace with honor..."

The Paris Peace Accords set January 27, 1973, 7 pm (EST) for a "cease-fire" to begin.  All POWS are to be released and all troops American and foreign are to be removed in sixty days.

*Henry Alfred Kissinger (1923-2023) was born in Furth, Germany & emigrated to the U.S. in 1938.  He attended Harvard University & became a government professor.  HAK was national security adviser 1969-1975 & Sec of State under Nixon & Ford.  He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973.

**Le Duc Tho (1911-1990) was born in Nam Dinh, Vietnam & became the 1st Asian to win the Nobel Peace Prize.  LDT refused to accept it because "the aggressor & the victim of aggression (were put) on the same par."

THE SIGNING TOOK PLACE IN EERIE SILENCE

VIETNAM PEACE ACCORDS SIGNED

Paris (JFK+50) On January 28, 1973, the New York Times reported that peace accords* bringing an end to America's "direct military involvement" in the war in Vietnam were signed here in Paris the previous day.  The New York Times said that the signing took place..."in eerie silence."

The Times also reported that despite a cease-fire agreement, hostilities continued and that President Richard M. Nixon "had ended the military draft."  By the agreement, the United States would remove all land and air forces from Vietnam.

Today's New York Times is reporting, coincidentally, that peace talks between United States and Taliban forces in Afghanistan "may bring an end to America's longest war--after more than 17 years."

*Signing of the Paris Peace Accords took place on Jan 27 1973.  Three governments were represented:  Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), Republic of South Vietnam & the Provisional Revolutionary Government.

VIETNAM CEASE-FIRE

CEASE-FIRE ANNOUNCED IN VIETNAM WAR 41 YEARS AGO 

Paris, France (JFK+50) President Richard M. Nixon announced 41 years ago today, January 23, 1973, that his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese envoy, Le Duc Tho, had agreed to "end the war" in Vietnam and "bring peace with honor..."

This settlement, known as The Paris Peace Accords, set January 27, 1973, seven p.m. (EST) for the cease-fire to begin.

All prisoners of war were to be released and all American and foreign troops were to be removed in 60 days.

WHAM-O INTRODUCED THE FRISBEE 57 YEARS AGO

57 years ago today, January 23, 1957, the Wham-O Toy Company introduced a new toy, the Frisbee.  

The toy's name came from the Frisbie Pie Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut (1871). 

College students enjoyed throwing empty pie tins at one another and they would yell "Frisbie". * 

*The modern Frisbee disc was patented by Wham-O in December 1967 and would sell over 100 million by 1977.
