"DESPITE REPORTS TO THE CONTRARY"

BUTLER TO RETAIN SUPREME COMMAND OF G.O.P. PARTY MACHINERY IN COMING CAMPAIGN

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 17, 1924, The Evening Star reports William M. Butler* of Massachusetts, chairman of the Republican National committee, "will remain in supreme command of the party machinery in the coming campaign."

This news comes despite reports to the contrary.  President Calvin Coolidge believes, states The Star, that the "real management of the campaign should be in the hands of the national chairman."

*William Morgan Butler (1861-1937) was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts & earned his LLB at Boston University.  WMB served as president of the Mass Senate 1894-1895 & as US Senator 1921-1926.  He was chairman of the NRC 1924-1928.

"I AM SURE IT WAS PASSED UNANIMOUSLY"

JFK TOLD OF RNC RESOLUTION SAYING HE WAS A FAILURE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On July 17, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was asked at his news conference* if he thought America was moving.  The reporter added, "if so, how and where?"

The question was based on JFK's 1960 campaign statement that it was "time for America to get moving" again.

Before JFK could respond, however, the reporter added...

"The reason I ask you the question, Mr. President, is that the Republican National Committee recently adopted a resolution saying you were pretty much a failure."

The President, with his characteristic wry wit, answered...

"I am sure it was passed unanimously."

*The news conference was held in the State Department Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
