"PRESIDENT VACATIONING AT RURITAN, N.J."

HARDING SHAKES MANY HANDS ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

Ruritan, New Jersey (JFK+50) On July 4, 1921, "people of Ruritan...paid their respects" to President Warren G. Harding who was vacationing at the home of Senator Joseph S. Frelinghuysen*.

The President shook many hands of the people who came to greet him at the Senator's country estate.

According to the Evening Star, the President declined to give a speech and spent most of Independence Day resting.  He did accept, however, a Silver Cup given to him by the Ruritan Valley Country Club where he has played several rounds of golf.

*Joseph Sherman Frelinghuysen, Sr. (1869-1948) was born in Ruritan, N.J. & served in the Spanish-American War.  JSF was NJ's first directly elected US senator serving 1917-1923.  After his defeat for re-election, JSF returned to the insurance business.
