ARMY GENERAL KUHN RETIRES AFTER 40 YEARS OF MILITARY SERVICE

San Francisco, California (JFK+50) On August 2, 1925, The Sunday Star reports that yesterday Brig. Gen. Joseph E. Kuhn* "was retired from the Army service at the Presideo**...with the rank of major general."

General Kuhn served "more than 40 years" in the United States Army.

While a military observer in Germany in 1906, Kuhn reportedly "kidded the kaiser" that the German army "could lick the world."

The General commanded the 79th Division during the world war.

*Joseph E. Kuhn (1864-1935) was born in Leavenworth, Kansas & graduated from the USMA 1885 at the top of his class.  JEK served in the Spanish-American War, the Russo-Japanese War & WWI.

**The Presideo (Presidio) was a US Army post located on the northern tip of the San Francisco peninsula.  It was established as a fort by Spain in 1776. The US Army ended its military use in 1988 & it was transferred to the National Park Service.

"HARDING'S PHYSICIANS CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC"

PRESIDENT HARDING IMPROVED AFTER RESTFUL SLEEP

San Francisco (JFK+50) On July 31, 1923, The Evening Star reports President Warren G. Harding's condition has improved based on an official bulletin issued at 10 a.m.

The bulletin reads...

"The President had a fairly comfortable night with considerable restful sleep.  His temperature...is 100, pulse 120, respiration 40 and regular."

President Harding slept for more than six hours and upon awakening asked for the morning newspapers.  Florence Harding, the First Lady, has "faithfully" been by her husband's bedside during this ordeal.

Physicians are cautiously optimistic the President will recover.

JFK+50 NOTE

The normal heart rate at rest should be between 60 & 100 beats per minute.  A heart rate above 100 is a warning sign and one above 120 could be indicative of an abnormal heart rhythm.

A respiratory rate over 24 breaths per second indicates a very serious condition.
