"THEY HAVE FLOUR, BUT NOBODY TO KNEAD & BAKE IT"

TOWN IN SPAIN HAS PUT ALL THEIR BAKERS IN JAIL

Calahorra, Spain (JFK+50) On October 14, 1925, Associated Press reports that the town of Calahorra* "has plenty of flour, but nobody to knead and bake it."

The reason is because the bakers have all been put in jail for refusing to sell bread "at a price fixed by the municipality."

When the bakers are released, the city has threatened to seize the bakeshops if they continue to refuse to comply with the set price scale.

In the meantime, bread is being supplied to Calahorra from neighboring towns.

*Calahorra is located on a hill in the province of La Rioja, Spain at the confluence of the Ebro & Cidacos Rivers.

The challenge was published in Varella's multi-language newspaper, The Royalists' Madrid Weekly.  Varella wants to insure Ibnez understands his challenge so he makes it in Spanish, English, French and Italian.

Varella writes that he will come to Paris "to slap (Ibnez's) face" for insulting the King of Spain. For his part, Ibnez responds...

"I am ready to meet him at any time."

*Alfonso XIII (1886-1941) King of Spain from birth 1886-1931 was born in the Royal Palace of Madrid & was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1917.  King Alfonso is the only monarch to have been so nominated.
