MAN SENTENCED TO 90 DAYS FOR FIRING SHOTS AT SWEETHEART'S SISTER

Seattle, Washington (JFK+50) On December 2, 1925, The Seattle Star reports that Justice C.C. Dalton has sentenced Max Netz "to 90 days...and examination by a sanity commission" for "firing four shots" at his sweetheart's sister.

Miss Lucille McGuire answered Mr. Netz's phone calls to her sister and upon hearing his voice always hung up.  She "cared not at all for" him.

On November 21, 1925, as the sisters were leaving home, Netz "stepped from behind a tree and opened fire."

The Star says that...

 "replacing Cupid's darts with bullets is no way to woo."

Cupid, according to classical mythology, is the son of Venus & Mars & is the god of desire, erotic love, attraction & affection.

"CAN YOU SHAKE A MEAN FOOT & SHIMMY?"

READERS INVITED TO ATTEND STAR-ORPHEUM CHARLESTON CONTEST

Seattle, Washington (JFK+50) On November 27, 1925, The Seattle Star asks readers this question...

"Can you shake a mean foot and shimmy from toes to eyebrows?"

If your answer is yes, you are invited to attend the Star-Orpheum Charleston Contest to be held next week.

There is no age limit, anyone from toddler to grandparents can dance.  The first and second place prizes will be silver loving cups.

A smaller 'President' Theater, the first Orpheum in Seattle, Washington was replaced by a new building in 1927.

LET THE FAIR BEGIN!

JFK OPENED SEATTLE WORLD'S FAIR 52 YEARS AGO TODAY 

Seattle, Washington and Palm Beach, Florida (JFK+50) The Seattle World's Fair was officially opened 52 years ago today, April 21, 1962, by President John F. Kennedy who declared "Let the fair begin!"

The President, on holiday with his family in Palm Beach, closed a telegraph key which in turn activated a signal to turn on a strand of lights in Seattle, Washington.

There were 12,000 people at the fair waiting for the lights to come on.

JFK said:  

"This manner of opening the fair is in keeping with the exposition's space age theme.  Literally,we are reaching out through space...to a star which we have never seen, to intercept sound in the form of radio waves."

JFK ANNOUNCES FIRST PEACE CORPS PROJECT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) Pleased to talk about anything but Cuba, President John F.Kennedy 53 years ago today, April 21, 1961, announced the first project of the Peace Corps would be to build a road in Tanganyika.

Peace Corps volunteers would lend expertise and assistance in the construction of the road.

Volunteers for the new corps had been applying at the rate of 1500 a week.

Thomas Quimby, who was in charge of recruits, said volunteers should have "serviceable skills" not necessarily "college degrees".

Quimby remarked:

"We want surveyors, people to lay out roads and drainage systems.  We need teachers, especially those who can teach the English language."

Quimby was asked why there were so many volunteers for the Peace Corps.  He answered:

"I think it springs from a desire to be significant in the development f a peaceful world."
