"COOLIDGE WILL CARRY OUT HARDING'S DYING WISH"

EVENING STAR REPORTS COOLIDGE FAVORS WORLD COURT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 12, 1923, The Evening Star reports that President Calvin Coolidge "has not the remotest intention of dropping the world court* issue."

The President, according to Frederic William Wile, will ask the United States Senate to adopt the late President Warren G. Harding's recommendation "for American adhesion to the tribunal."

President Coolidge's first message to Congress "will carry out Harding's 'dying wish' in the belief of 'his close friends."

*Permanent Court of International Justice (1922-1946) headquartered in The Hague, The Netherlands, heard 29 cases.  In 1946, the PCIJ was replaced by the International Court of Justice & the United Nations.

"DEMOCRATIC PARTY'S UNRIVALED BEST MIND"

WOODROW WILSON CALLS ON DEMOCRATS TO SUPPORT HARDING'S PROPOSAL FOR AMERICAN ENTRY TO THE WORLD COURT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 18, 1923, Frederic William Wile of the Evening Star reports former president Woodrow Wilson "is advising democratic senators...to support President (Warren G.) Harding's proposal for American adhesion to the world court."

According to a letter written by the 28th POTUS to Representative Arthur B. Rouse* (D-Kentucky), while Mr. Wilson prefers 'unconditional American entry into the world court,' he believes Mr. Harding's proposed terms of entry are better than no entry at all.

Mr. Wile characterizes Mr. Wilson, despite the former president's health issues, to be the Democratic Party's "unrivaled 'best mind.'"

"SENATORS WILL TRY TO GET HARDING TO BACK DOWN"

G.O.P. IS SPLIT ON PRESIDENT'S WORLD COURT FIGHT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On April 25, 1923, the Washington Times reports a split in the Republican Party now exists because of President Warren G. Harding's "fight for American participation in the international court*."

The President will "face a series of conferences" today with G.O.P. leaders who are "hostile" to his program.

While the world court proposals, writes H.K.Reynolds, may result in a "hopeless split" in the party, this could be avoided if Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr. of Massachusetts and Senator James E. Watson of Indiana can convince Mr. Harding to "back down" on his proposals.

The President, however, does have solid support from Congressman William Graham of Illinois who is prepared to back his proposals on the world court.

*World Court, a.k.a. Permanent Court of International Justice was adopted by the League of Nations (1920) & ratified (1921).  Headquarters was at The Hague, Netherlands
