VENEZUELA

On December 16, 1961, President & Mrs. Kennedy visited Venezuela.

They attended ceremonies in honor of JFK's new "Alliance for Progress" program.  JFK cut a white & gold cord (a symbol for peace & prosperity).

The Alliance for Progress aimed to establish economic cooperation between the United States & Latin American countries.

Latin America pledged $80 billion while the US pledged $20 billion over a ten year period.

The program required Latin American participants to draw up comprehensive plans for national development.

In the short term, the Alliance proved successful but in part because JFK's successors did not give it as much support the program was less successful in the long term.

On December 16, 1953, President Eisenhower held the first "White House" Press conference with 161 reporters.

On December 16....

1944, the Battle of the Bulge began in Belgium.
1915, Albert Einstein published his "Theory of Relativity".
1773, the "Boston Tea Party" took place.
