FRANCE WITHDRAWS NAVY FROM NATO FLEET
Much to the dismay of the Kennedy administration, France announced today its intention to withdraw the French navy from the fleet of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The announcement came as a surprise to the administration at the same time JFK is preparing to go to Europe for a series of talks with US allies.
The President is concerned that this action with serve as a precedent for other NATO nations.

JFK GREETS STUDENTS IN THE ROSE GARDEN
President Kennedy greeted students today from the graduating class of Glen Lake (Michigan) High School in the Rose Garden at the White House.
JFK said to the students:
"All the people you read about in your history books--Lincoln, the Adamses, Monroe, the Wilsons, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower....all lived here & all participated in making this country greater."

President Kennedy's proposals to impose strict controls on farm production suffered defeat today when nearly 50 Democrats joined with Republicans to block their passage.

3 CIVIL RIGHTS WORKERS KILLED BY KKK IN MISSISSIPPI
3 young civil rights workers attempting to register black voters in the state of Mississippi were killed today by members of the Ku Klux Klan.
The 3 workers have been identified as Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman & James Chaney.
They were in the process of returning from at trip to Philadelphia, Mississippi to register black voters when they were pulled over for speeding.
After they were released, the 3 workers were followed, stopped, shot & buried in pre-dug graves.*

REAGAN SHOOTER FOUND NOT GUILTY BY REASON OF INSANITY
John W. Hinckley, Jr., the young man who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981, was found not guilty by reason of insanity today.
The verdict came after 7 weeks of testimony & 3 days of jury deliberations.
Hinckley's defense attorneys argued that he has a narcissistic personality disorder & a pathological obsession with the 1976 film "Taxi Driver" & the actress who starred in it, Jody Foster.
The film is fictional story about a man who tries to assassinate a senator.*
*Hinckley is placed in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, a mental institution.

COLUMBIA INTRODUCES THE "LP"
Columbia Records introduced today the "LP" or Long-Play vinyl record.
This new record will enable listeners to hear several tunes on each side of a record instead of the single tune per side on the 78 rpm recordings.
The "LP" plays on standard record players or phonographs at 33 1/3 rpms.
Columbia gave a public demonstration of the "LP" today at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

The state of New Hampshire became the 9th state to ratify the United States Constitution today & in doing so make it a binding document by the consent of the required majority of the 13 states.*
