JFK ISSUES ORDER ON EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
President John F. Kennedy today issued "Executive Order #11114".
The order extends the authority of the President's Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity.
It requires all federal project contractors to follow non-discrimination employment practices or face cancellation of contracts, withholding of payments & legal action.

JFK SPEAKS TO STUDENTS BOUND FOR AFRICA
President Kennedy spoke to members of Operation Crossroads Africa today on the South Lawn of the White House.
The OCA is a student organization of volunteers who are bound for Africa to work in schools & hospitals.
JFK said:
"In going to Africa you represent the best of our country & I know they will welcome you. And I think that you will have the feeling of having served this country & in a broader sense, the free community of people in a very crucial time."

JFK & PM IKEDA OF JAPAN ISSUE JOINT STATEMENT
After 2 days of meetings at the White House, President Kennedy & Japanese Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda issued a joint statement today announcing the establishment of a US-Japanese Committee on Trade & Economic Affairs "to strengthen the partnership between the two countries."

AMERICAN MUSICIANS ACCUSED OF BEING COMMUNIST SYMPATHIZERS
"Red Channels: The Report of Communist Infiltration in Radio & Television", published by the right-wing journal "Counterattack", has charged Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Lena Horne, Pete Seeger & Artie Shaw of being suspected communist sympathizers.*
*The publication of the names of these musicians & many others resulted in "blacklisting" & other harmful outcomes .
FDR SIGNS "GI BILL"
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Serviceman's Readjustment Act today at the White House.
The "GI Bill" is designed to compensate returning World War II veterans for their service.
Veterans will receive money for college tuition, living expenses, books & supplies.*
*Before WWII, 15% of young Americans went on to higher education. After WWII, 50% of all college students were veterans.
50 years later the GI Bill had provided benefits for 10 million veterans & their dependents.

CONTINENTAL CURRENCY ISSUED
The Continental Congress has issued $2 million in bills of credit.
The "Continentals" feature likenesses of revolutionary soldiers & the inscription "The United Colonies".*
*Continental currency will soon become virtually worthless because there is nothing to "back up" the notes. Rampant inflation will lead to the phrase: "Not worth a Continental".
