"JOHNNY WE HARDLY KNEW YE": Memories of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, The Lodge Fight I.
Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we begin our report on Chapter 3 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy. It is published by Little, Brown & Company.
The title of Chapter 3 is "The Lodge Fight".
Kenneth O'Donnell & David Powers begin this chapter by writing that contrary to popular belief JFK's road to the White House was not scripted. They tell us that JFK "did not begin to think seriously about running for President until 1956."
O'Donnell even goes on to admit that when he first met Jack Kennedy in 1946 he didn't even expect that he would be elected to Congress. Kenny soon learned, however, that from his 1st day in Congress on January 3, 1947, JFK was "determined to be his own man & nobody's protege."
Ken points out that had JFK been content to stay in Congress, he "could have stayed on indefinitely."*
*JFK was re-elected to Congress in 1948 (unopposed) & in 1950 by a landslide.
Jack realized, however, even before he finished his 1st congressional term, that he did not want a career in the United States Congress.
In 1948, JFK "began to plan" to run either for the United States Senate or the Governorship of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
