"JOHNNY WE HARDLY KNEW YE": Memories of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, The Lodge Fight II.

Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we continue our report on Chapter 3 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy.  It is published by Little, Brown & Company.

The title of Chapter 3 is "The Lodge Fight".

Kenneth O'Donnell & David Powers say that JFK prepared his run for the United States Senate over a 4 year time span by "systematically planning speaking engagements at social events in each of 39 cities & 312 towns."

Dave Powers says that Jack was welcomed everywhere because he was "willing to go anywhere" & he did not charge for his appearances.

The problem, however, was the constant pain from the back injury.  JFK was forced to use crutches which he kept concealed when he appeared before an audience.

After an appearance, JFK had to soak for an hour in a tub of hot water before going to bed.

Jack kept a state map in his apartment & put colored pins on each city or town he visited.  Jack "wanted this map completely covered with pins."
