WISCONSIN AND WEST VIRGINIA I
Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we begin our report on Chapter 6 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy. It is published by Little, Brown & Company.
The title of Chapter 6 is WISCONSIN AND WEST VIRGINIA.
Kenneth O'Donnell discusses the preliminary wheeling & dealing leading up to JFK's campaigns in the two key primary states of Wisconsin & West Virginia.
Kenny writes:
"Our memories of Jack Kennedy are filled with scenes & incidents in Wisconsin, most of them seeming more amusing now....than then in that winter of cold winds, cold towns & many cold people."
He goes on to tell the story of when JFK went into a tavern & went up to a booth where a man & woman were sitting & said: 'My name is John Kennedy & I'm running for President.' The man replied, 'President of what?'
Undeterred, JFK was at a plant entrance at 6 o'clock the next morning shaking hands with employees arriving for work.
Kenny says it was bitterly cold & his ears were numb. He turned to Dave Powers & said:
"If I had (Jack's) money, I'd be down there on the patio in Palm Beach."
