WISCONSIN AND WEST VIRGINIA II
Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we continue our report on Chapter 6 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy. It is published by Little, Brown & Company.
The title of Chapter 6 is WISCONSIN AND WEST VIRGINIA.
Kenneth O'Donnell writes that Jacqueline Kennedy "worked hard in Wisconsin."
Kenny says Mrs. Kennedy would walk out of the car into snow & wind to shake hands & talk to people in the small towns of the state.
At one point, JFK said:
"Jackie's drawing more people than I am, as usual."
And then one day while walking into a supermarket, Jackie listened to the store manager announce a sale over the store intercom. She asked him if she could say a few words about her husband. He obliged & she said:
"Just keep on with your shopping while I tell you about my husband, John F. Kennedy. He cares deeply about the welfare of his country--please vote for him."
Kenny goes on to say that it wasn't just Jackie lending her hand, but all the Kennedys. JFK's primary opponent, Hubert Humphrey, said:
"(Those Kennedys) are all over the state, and they look alike & sound alike."
Senator Kennedy won the Wisconsin Primary polling more votes than any candidate in the history of the state Democratic primary.
But when Eunice saw Jack's "glum" expression as the results were coming in, she asked him "What does it all mean?"
Senator Kennedy responded.....
"It means that we've got to go to West Virginia in the morning & do it all over again."
