Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we continue our report of Chapter 9 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy. It is published by Little, Brown & Company.
The title of Chapter 9 is FORMING A GOVERNMENT.
Kenneth O'Donnell discusses the selection of Robert F. Kennedy as Attorney-General in the JFK administration.
Kenny puts it this way: "The Cabinet member who put up the strongest fight against being pulled into the boat was Bobby."
RFK was rightly concerned that the appointment of the President's brother to the Cabinet "would cause too much public controversy & embarrassment."
Kenny writes that despite this concern, RFK did not want to miss out on the excitement of serving in his brother's administration.
JFK's take on the matter was this:
"What if he does happen to be my brother? I want the best men I can get, and they don't come any better than Bobby."
On Friday, December 16, 1960, on the steps outside his Georgetown townhouse, the President-elect introduced Bobby Kennedy as his choice for Attorney General of the United States.*
*JFK had quipped that one morning he would stick his head out the door & if nobody was in sight he would whisper: "It's Bobby!"
