FORMING A GOVERNMENT IV

Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we continue our report of Chapter 9 of the book by Kenneth P. O'Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy.  It is published by Little, Brown & Company.

The title of Chapter 9 is FORMING A GOVERNMENT.

Kenneth O'Donnell says that JFK was considering some Republicans for his cabinet.

The President-elect said:

"I can use a few smart Republicans (&) we need a Secretary of the Treasury who can call a few of those people on Wall Street by their first names."

In the meantime, JFK chose Adlai Stevenson for UN Ambassador who would accept the appointment despite preferring to be Secretary of State.

JFK's 1st choice for Secretary of State, Robert A. Lovett, former Secretary of Defense in the Truman administration, declined because of poor health.

Kennedy ultimately chose Lovett's recommendation, Dean Rusk, a Rhodes Scholar & president of the Rockefeller Foundation.

JFK chose Republican Bob McNamara, president of Ford Motor Company, for Secretary of Defense & Republican Douglas Dillon for Secretary of the Treasury.

Orville Freeman, governor of Minnesota was the pick for Secretary of Agriculture.
