JFK REPORTED TO NATION ON TRIP TO EUROPE 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) President John F. Kennedy reported to the nation  in an address that was broadcast on radio on television about his recent trip to Europe 50 years ago today, July 5, 1963.

The President had arrived back at the White House on July 3.

JFK said:

"Today I can report an even deeper tie between the people of Europe and the people of the United States. I heard expressions of confidence in the United States from leaders of Germany, England, Italy and Ireland and I felt the....affection that their people have for the people of the United States."

ELVIS RECORDS "THAT'S ALL RIGHT MAMA"

Memphis, Tennessee (JFK+50) "That's All Right Mama" by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup was recorded 59 years ago today, July 5, 1954, at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee by a young truck driver named Elvis Presley.

Presley, who made the record as a birthday gift for his mother, paid $3.98 for the recording.

Elvis sang other songs but none were so unique as "That's All Right Mama".*

*Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records, released the record as a single just two weeks later and it became an instant hit.

BIKINI UNVEILED IN PARIS 67 YEARS AGO TODAY

Sixty-seven years ago today, July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveiled a two piece swimsuit which he named the "bikini" after the site of an atomic test in the Pacific.

The bikini was modeled by a 19 year old showgirl at the Casino de Paris named Micheline Bernardini.

The swimsuit was made out of 30 square inches of fabric.*

*The bikini did not become popular in the US until the early 1960s when Brian Hyland sang the popular song: "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini".
