"GOVERNMENT UNDER ABDUL PASHA IS RECOGNIZED"

EGYPT ACHIEVES INDEPENDENCE FROM GREAT BRITAIN 

Cairo, Egypt (JFK+50) On March 16, 1922, Egypt achieves independence from Great Britain as the government under Abdul Pasha* is recognized.

The British, however, retains her interests in Sudan and reserves the right to defend Egypt against attack.  Other reservations include protection of foreign interests and the security of British imperial communications.

British troops remain in Egypt and Great Britain & France retain control of the Suez Canal.

*Abdel Khalek Sarwat Pasha (1873-1928) was born in Cairo & graduated from Khedival School of Law, 1893.  He served as Egypt's 1st Attorney General 1908-1912 & as Minister of Justice 1914-1919. 

AKSP was instrumental in bringing GB to issue its Unilateral Declaration of Egyptian Independence, Feb 1922.  AKSP was Prime Minister of Egypt March 1-Nov 30, 1922.
