"IF REPUBLICANS LOSE CONTROL OF THE HOUSE"

DEMOCRATS COULD CONTROL ALL IMPORTANT HOUSE COMMITTEES 

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 28, 1922, Representative Simeon D. Fess* (R-Ohio), on the eve of his retirement as chairman of the republican congressional committee....declared...that if the republicans lost control of the House...in the November elections all important house committees would have democrats as chairmen."

In a statement released to the press, Mr. Fess states...

"Assuming that the present sitting democratic ranking committee members will be re-elected...the conduct of legislation will be...under the control of men who come from a small section of the country."

*Simeon Davison Fess (1861-1936) was born in Harrod, Ohio & educated at Ohio Northern University, B.A., L.L.B., He taught history at ONU & served in administration.  

SDF served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1915-1923 & the U.S. Senate 1923-1935.  He was defeated for re-election in 1934. 

JFK+50 NOTE

Republicans lost 77 seats in the House of Representatives to the Democrats in the Congressional elections of 1922 but retained their majority.
