"OTHER NATIONS KNOW VALUE OF SEA CARRYING IN TRADE"

PRESIDENT WILL NOT TOLERATE FOREIGN LOBBY AGAINST AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 21, 1922, the Evening Star reports that President Warren G. Harding's letter to Republican leader Frank W. Mondell* "was intended...as a warning to foreign countries that a lobby against an American merchant marine bill would not be tolerated."

The President wrote...

"Other nations know the value of sea carrying as an adjunct of trade and the individual discouragement abroad to our worthy aims...ought to argue an American interest no longer to be ignored."

*Frank Wheeler Mondell (1860-1939) was born in St. Louis & served as mayor of Newcastle, Wyoming 1888-1895.  FWM served in the U.S. Congress 1895-1897 & 1899-1923.  He was majority leader in the 66th & 67th Congresses.
