"OTHER NATIONS KNOW VALUE OF SEA CARRYING IN TRADE"

PRESIDENT WILL NOT TOLERATE FOREIGN LOBBY AGAINST AMERICAN MERCHANT MARINE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 21, 1922, the Evening Star reports that President Warren G. Harding's letter to Republican leader Frank W. Mondell* "was intended...as a warning to foreign countries that a lobby against an American merchant marine bill would not be tolerated."

The President wrote...

"Other nations know the value of sea carrying as an adjunct of trade and the individual discouragement abroad to our worthy aims...ought to argue an American interest no longer to be ignored."

*Frank Wheeler Mondell (1860-1939) was born in St. Louis & served as mayor of Newcastle, Wyoming 1888-1895.  FWM served in the U.S. Congress 1895-1897 & 1899-1923.  He was majority leader in the 66th & 67th Congresses.

"PRESIDENT HARDING OPPOSED TO BORAH PROPOSAL"

DISARMAMENT AMENDMENT DOOMED TO FAILURE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 27, 1921, leaders in the House of Representatives declared that the Borah disarmament amendment to the Navy bill would find "unyielding opposition."

Majority Leader Frank W. Mondell* (R-Wyoming), after conferring with Warren G. Harding, confirmed the President was opposed to the amendment.  

In the meantime, two disarmament amendments to the Navy bill were defeated in the United States Senate.

*Frank Wheeler Mondell (1860-1939) was born in St. Louis, Missouri & served as mayor of Newcastle, Wyoming 1888-1895.  FWM served in the US House of Representatives 1895-1897 & 1899-1923.  He was majority leader 1919-1923.

"KNOX PEACE RESOLUTION HELD UP INDEFINITELY"

HARDING SUPPORTS ALLIES' DEMAND THAT GERMANY PAY UP 

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 9, 1921, a "high spokesman" of the Harding administration "made it clear (that) this government is vigorously behind the Allies in the demand that Germany* accept the terms just proposed."

Carter Field, in his front-page story in the New York Tribune, reported that Republican leader Frank W. Mondell** of the House of Representatives "had a long conference with President Warren G. Harding today" and verified that the Knox peace resolution "would be held up in the House indefinitely."

*Germany was under the Weimar Republic, a federal constitutional republic, 1918-1933.  The 1st constituent assembly took place in the city of Weimar.

**Frank Wheeler Mondell (1860-1939) was born in St. Louis, Mo.  FWM became mayor of Newcastle, WY & served in the US House of Representatives 1895-1923.  He was majority leader 1919-1923.  In 1924, FWM served as chairman of the Republican National Convention.
