"HE GAVE IT TO THE BUILDER OF A COLORED CHURCH"

AFRICAN-AMERICAN MAN CHARGED WITH THEFT OF BRICK 

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On July 26, 1922, Robert Baylor was charged in the United States branch of police court* "with the larceny** of 1,540 building brick."

Mr. Baylor, an African-American, "was fined $50 and given sixty days in jail by Judge Mattingly."

The brick, which was stored in a vacant lot at 19th and E Streets, SE, had been given by Mr. Baylor "to the builder of a colored church" under construction in Northeast Washington.

*police court is a court of record having jurisdiction over minor offenses

**larceny is the unlawful taking or theft of personal property belonging to another person or business
