HARDING ACCEPTS INVITATION TO BECOME HONORARY FLATHEAD
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On July 22, 1922, President Warren G. Harding "accepted the invitation of the Flathead Indians* of Montana to become an honorary member of their tribe."
The invitation had been extended to the President in behalf of the Flathead tribe by the Ronan** Community Club.
The President included in his acceptance that he would not object to having a mountain peak located on the Flathead reservation named "Mount Harding."
*Flathead Indians, North American tribe living in Western Montana typical of Plains Indian culture. They refer to themselves as Salish.
**Ronan is located in Lake City, Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation.
JFK+50 NOTE
Mount Harding, Alaska was named in honor of the former POTUS in 1924 by Skagway Alpine Club. Mr. Harding visited Skagway on July 11, 1923. Mount Calowahcan, the 6th highest peak in the Mission Mountains of Montana, was previously named Mount Harding.
