MAINE'S PARTY LEADERS SEE VICTORY IN STATE AS BOOST TO CHANCES IN REST OF COUNTRY
Portland, Maine (JFK+50) On September 1, 1922, the Evening Star reports that the state of Maine "is looked upon as furnishing the first straw to show which way the political wind is blowing." The upcoming election in the state, scheduled for September 11, will be no exception.
N.O. Messenger writes...
"The Maine democrats and republicans have been put on their mettle by their...party management to do their best...for the effect it (will) have upon the rest of the country."
The Star reminds readers that Maine elects her senators, representatives, governor and other state officials in advance of the general election in November. This resulted in the old axiom "As goes Maine, so goes the nation."
JFK+50 NOTE
In the Election of 1936, FDR (Democrat) won 46 of the 48 states. He lost only Maine & Vermont. The Democrats then said, "As goes Maine, so goes Vermont!"
