EIGHT HOUR RAINSTORM IS D.C.'S HEAVIEST SINCE 1878
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 2, 1922, "Washington was deluged...by the heaviest rainstorm recorded by the local weather bureau since 1878."
The Evening Star reports "homes were inundated, street car traffic halted, sewers flooded and electric service...paralyzed."
The storm lasted eight hours between 1 and 9 a.m. local time. The heavy rainfall was basically limited to the District's metropolitan area.
While the greatest damage was to the city's street car system, the Star reports that "actual damaged...was...small" considering the severity of the storm.
