"PUBLIC INTEREST TRANSCENDS ANY PARTISAN ADVANTAGE"

COAL STRIKE SETTLED, CONTRACT APPROVED BY OPERATORS & MINERS

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On September 3, 1922, the Evening Star reports "an agreement to end the anthracite suspension was reached by the operators and miners" late last night.

The announcement was made by Senator George W. Pepper* (R-PA) and Senator David A. Reed (R-PA).

The operators and miners had received, prior to their agreement, a message from President Warren G. Harding which read, in part...

"The public interest transcends any partisan advantage that you might gain by further resistance."

The agreement will remain in effect until August 31, 1923.

*George Wharton Pepper (1867=1961) was born in Philadelphia & earned his B.A. at the University of PA, 1887.  GWP graduated University of PA Law School, 1889.  He was 1st in his class in both schools.  GWP served in the US Senate 1922-1927.
