"IT IS A SPLENDID APPOINTMENT"

PRESIDENT HARDING ANNOUNCES SUTHERLAND TO SUCCEED CLARKE ON HIGH COURT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On September 4, 1922, the White House announced that George H. Sutherland* will succeed John H. Clarke** "as associate justice of the United States Supreme Court."

Justice Clarke is retiring as of September 18 in order "to give more time to the cause of the League of Nations."

The announcement, made by President Warren G. Harding, "caused general surprise" according to the reporting of the New York Tribune.

Justice Clarke, a Democrat, had been appointed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916.  Former U.S. Senator Sutherland is a Republican.

*George H. Sutherland (1862-1942) was born in Buckinghamshire, U.K. & studied law at the University of Michigan.  GHS served in the US House of Representatives 1901-1903 & US Senate 1905-1917.  He was an associate justice on the US Supreme Court 1922-1938.

**John Hessin Clarke (1857-1945) was born in Lisbon, Ohio & served as associate justice on the US Supreme Court 1916-1922.
