"A RECOGNIZED AND MOST APPEALING EMERGENCY"

PRESIDENT AUTHORIZES NATIONWIDE APPEAL FOR FUNDS FOR RELIEF OF NEAR EAST REFUGEES

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On October 8, 1922, President Warren G. Harding "authorized a nationwide appeal for funds for the relief of the thousands of refugees in the Near East."

The New York Herald reports the American Red Cross and the Near East Relief will distribute funds raised by a 'special' committee headed by former Postmaster General Will Hays*.

President Harding described the situation as...

"a recognized and most appealing emergency."

*William Harrison Hays (1879-1954) was chairman of the Republican National Committee, 1918-1921 & Campaign Manager for Harding's 1920 presidential campaign.  

WHH served as Postmaster General 1921-1922 resigning to become head of the Motion Picture Producers & Distributors of America, 1922-1945.
