"A RECOGNIZED AND MOST APPEALING EMERGENCY"

PRESIDENT AUTHORIZES NATIONWIDE APPEAL FOR FUNDS FOR RELIEF OF NEAR EAST REFUGEES

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On October 8, 1922, President Warren G. Harding "authorized a nationwide appeal for funds for the relief of the thousands of refugees in the Near East."

The New York Herald reports the American Red Cross and the Near East Relief will distribute funds raised by a 'special' committee headed by former Postmaster General Will Hays*.

President Harding described the situation as...

"a recognized and most appealing emergency."

*William Harrison Hays (1879-1954) was chairman of the Republican National Committee, 1918-1921 & Campaign Manager for Harding's 1920 presidential campaign.  

WHH served as Postmaster General 1921-1922 resigning to become head of the Motion Picture Producers & Distributors of America, 1922-1945.

"INDICTS WILSON FOR INCOMPETENCY"

HOOVER TURNS ON WILSON, WILL SUPPORT HARDING

Marion, Ohio (JFK+50) On October 6, 1920, Republican presidential nominee Warren G. Harding was informed that former Food Administrator Herbert C. Hoover intended to pledge his support and "deliver a blast against the Wilson administration" in a forthcoming national radio broadcast.

Mr. Hoover's address would "indict the Wilson administration for general incompetency and blundering."

The New York Herald also reported that Republican National Chairman William H. Hays* had predicted Democratic nominee James Cox would not win any state outside the "Solid South" except Oklahoma."**

*William Harrison Hays, Sr. (1879-1954) was born in Sullivan, Indiana.  WHH served as U.S. Postmaster General & first Chairman of the Motion Picture Producers & Distributors of America.

**Cox won the "Solid South" except Tennessee, and lost Oklahoma.  Harding defeated Cox in the electoral college 404-127.
