PRESIDENT ASKS CONGRESS TO PASS SHIP SUBSIDY BILL
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On November 21, 1922, President Warren G. Harding, speaking to a joint session of the United States Congress, asked members "to help the American merchant marine compete successfully with the sea carriers of Great Britain, Japan and other maritime nations" by passing the ship subsidy bill.
The President said...
"It would be doubly humiliating when we own ships and fail in the genius and capacity to turn their prows toward the marts of the world."
JFK+50 NOTE
According to TIME, President Harding presented the Ship Subsidy Bill (1922) "in person" to an extra session of Congress. The legislation died in the U.S. Senate.
