"STRONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT AMERICAN POLICIES"

DENBY CALLS FOR AN AMERICAN NAVY 'SECOND TO NONE'

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On December 3, 1922, Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby*, in his annual report to Congress, calls for "a general naval policy providing for a navy "second to none" and strong enough to support American policies and commerce and guard American continental and overseas possessions."

The Secretary says that this navy will remain within the provisions of the Naval Limitation Treaty**

*Edwin C. Denby (1870-1929) was born in Evansville, Indiana & graduated from University of Michigan Law School, 1896.  ECD served in U.S. House of Representatives, 1905-1911 & as navy secretary under Presidents Harding &  Coolidge.

**Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, effective 1923-1936, limited the construction of battleships, battle cruisers & aircraft carriers by the nations signing.  It required scrapping of 26 U.S., 24 British & 16 Japanese warships.
