'GRAND OLD MAN' OF MINNESOTA DEAD AT 80
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On April 29, 1923, the Sunday Star reports the death of United States Senator Knute Nelson*. The Senator passed away in his berth aboard a train bound to Chicago from Washington, D.C. Death came at 8:15 last evening. The cause of death was given as heart disease.
Senator Nelson, known as the "Grand Old Man" of Minnesota, was the oldest member of the Senate at age 80 and had served in the body 28 years. The Senator was a Republican.
*Knute Nelson (1843-1923) was born in Norway & educated at Albion College & Albion Academy. KN served in the Union Army during the Civil War & in the US House of Representatives, 1883-1889, US Senate 1895-1923. He also was Governor of Minnesota, 1893-1895.
