PRESIDENT EBERT OF GERMANY DIES FOLLOWING APPENDICITIS OPERATION
Berlin, Germany (JFK+50) On February 28, 1925, the first president of the German Republic, Friederich Ebert*, died "after a four-day struggle with peritonitis** following an operation for appendicitis."
Mourning ceremonies are scheduled to be held at the presidential palace and in the Wilhelm Strasse***.
S.D. Weyer writes that President Ebert's leadership restored credit, revitalized industry and caused Germans "to look forward with courage and renewed optimism."
*Friederich Ebert (1871-1925) was born in Heidelberg, Germany & joined the Social Democratic Party in 1889. FE was a member of the Reichstag 1912-1918 & president of Germany 1919-1925.
