175 EMPLOYEES AT GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE DISCHARGED
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On March 8, 1925, The Sunday Star reports "approximately 175 employees of the Government Printing Office* were summarily discharged at the close of business activity yesterday."
There was no warning for this "first step" in George H. Carter**'s "drastic personnel reduction program." Some of the discharged employees have 25 years of service at the GPO.
The job cuts are a result of "the failure of Congress to appropriate sufficient funds for printing."
Another 400 to 500 GPO employees are slated for furloughs tomorrow.
JFK+50 NOTE
They say 'history repeats itself.' Well, the news today is all about Elon Musk cutting jobs in the federal government. As I'm going to press today, I'm hearing 75,000 jobs may be cut at the Veterans Administration.
I have just filed with them for benefits for my 99 year old mother (wife of US Army WWII veteran) who I am the main caregiver for & await confirmation of those benefits.
In my visits to the local VA office there were only 2 employees there and just one handled applications. My Mom is due to get about $200 a month to cover $1500 a month in outside care-giving 2 days a week, but every little bit helps.
*Government Printing Office (U.S. Government Publishing Office) began operations in 1861 as an agency of Congress to publish & distribute information products and services for the federal government. The name change came in 2014. Its HQs is located at 732 N. Capitol Street, NW, Washington, D.C.
**George H. Carter served as Public Printer 1921-1934. Under his leadership, GPO experienced a decade of vigorous, expanding business along with lasting changes to culture & organizational structure.
