NEW YORK, 'THE MODERN BABYLON', SAYS SOCIETY FOR SUPPRESSION OF VICE
New York City (JFK+50) On April 23, 1925, Associated Press says that the 51st annual report of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice* pictures New York City as "the modern Babylon."
AP reports the reason given for this description of 'The Big Apple,' is the "licentious and salacious matter purveyed by stage, screen and book."
The Society states all theatrical producers and publishers who are responsible for such material should be "compelled to stand at the entrance of their places of business and cry...
'Unclean, Unclean, Unclean!'"
*NY Society for the Suppression of Vice (1873-1950) was founded by Anthony Comstock & his supporters in the YMCA, The organization was dedicated to supervise the morality of the public & monitor compliance with state laws working with courts & DAs in bringing offenders to justice.
