"I'LL START WHEN I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ELSE"

JOHN PHILIP SOUSA, AGE 70, 'TOO YOUNG' FOR GOLF

New York City (JFK+50) On July 13, 1925, Associated Press reports that John Philip Sousa* "regards himself as too young to play golf."  The "noted bandmaster" told his friend, William Cross, 'I'll start golfing when I can't do anything else."

Mr. Sousa has lately been visiting Mr. Cross in Middletown, New York.

*John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was born in Washington, D.C. at 636 G. Street, SE. near the Marine Barracks.  JPS became a composer & conductor best known for military marches & is known as "The March King."  

JPS's "The Stars & Stripes Forever" is the official march anthem of the United States.  He served in the USMC 1868-1875 & was conductor of USMC Marine Band, 'The President's Own," 1880-1902, leading the band under 5 POTUS.

"SHOT HIS USUAL MACHINE-LIKE GOLF"

BOBBY JONES WINS NATIONAL AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP...AT LONG LAST

Ardmore, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On September 28, 1924, The Sunday Star reports that 22 year old Robert 'Bobby' Tyre Jones, Jr.* of Atlanta, Georgia yesterday "acquired the national amateur golf championship" he had sought for eight years."

The accomplishment came at the Merion Cricket Club where, reports the Associated Press, Jones "shot his usual machine-like golf."

*Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. (1902-1971) was born in Atlanta, Georgia & was educated at Georgia Tech, Harvard & Emory University.  He became a lawyer but is best known as one of the most influential figures in golf.  

RTJ founded & designed Augusta National Golf Club & co-founded the Masters.  RTJ dominated amateur golf 1923-1930 & turned pro in 1930.

"GOLF IS A THOROUGHLY OSTEOPATHIC GAME"

DOCTOR SAYS BETTER TO GOLF THAN DO BUSINESS

New York City (JFK+50) On July 6, 1923, the Associated Press reports that Dr. F.P. Millard of Toronto, speaking here in New York yesterday at the annual convention of the American Osteopathic Association*, advises "If golf interferes with business, drop business."

Dr. Millard said...

"Dropping business now and then is a good way to make the business grow and to have some fun with it besides."

The good doctor went on to say that "golf is a thoroughly osteopathic** game" which is beneficial for the "stiffness of the spine or creakiness of the joints" in those folks approaching middle-age.

*American Osteopathic Association, founded in 1897 & headquartered in Chicago, represents 176,000 osteopathic medical doctors & students in the U.S.

**osteopathic is a "whole person" approach treating the whole person rather than just symptoms
