JFK & KHRUSHCHEV MEET IN VIENNA


President & Mrs. Kennedy arrived in Vienna, Austria today after a whirlwind visit to France.


The Kennedys were greeted at Schwechat Airport by Adolf Sharf, the President of Austria.  


JFK met Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev for the 1st time at the American Embassy.


Mr. Kennedy was accompanied by Secretary of State Dean Rusk & National Security Adviser McGeorge Bundy.


Mr. Khrushchev was assisted by Andrei Gromyko & Anatoliy Dobrynin.


In four hours of summit talks today, the issues discussed included the situation in Laos.


Talks will continue tomorrow.

POPE JOHN XXIII DIES IN ROME


Pope John XXIII, "the Good Pope John", died today at the age of 81 at the Vatican in Rome, Italy.


The Pope was elected on October 28, 1958.


President Kennedy said the Pope's...


 "wisdom, compassion & kindly strength have bequeathed humanity a new legacy of purpose & courage for the future."

EDWARD WHITE "WALKS" IN SPACE


Major Edward H. White II became the 1st American to "walk" in space today.

He follows Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei A. Leonov who became the 1st man to walk in space earlier in March.


White was attached to his Gemini IV spacecraft by a 25 foot tether.  He was able to control his movements with an oxygen jet propulsion system.


His walk lasted 20 minutes.*


Major White died on January 27, 1967 along with Gus Grissom & Roger Chaffee when, as they were doing testing on the launchpad, a fire broke out in the cabin.

JFK SPEAKS AT ASSUMPTION COLLEGE 


Senator John F. Kennedy gave the commencement address today at the 38th graduation at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts.


JFK said that communists may have room for some churches but "there is no room for God" in their system".


He reminded the students that since "the claim of the state must be total & no other loyalty...can be tolerated", God simply cannot have a place under communism.


Senator Kennedy urged the graduates to "stimulate a revival of our religious faith" & "renew the battle against weary indifference".


Mr. Kennedy was awarded an Honorary Dr. of Laws degree.

DUKE OF WINDSOR MARRIES WALLIS WARFIELD


The Duke of Windsor & former King Edward VIII of Great Britain & Northern Ireland married American divorcee Wallis Warfield today.


The Duke abdicated the British throne on December 10, 1936 after 325 days of rule.


In his radio address on that day, King Edward said:


"I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility & to discharge the duties of king...without the help & support of the woman I love."*


*Edward died in Paris in 1972 followed by his wife in 1986.
