PRESIDENT & MRS. KENNEDY ARRIVE IN ENGLAND
President & Mrs. Kennedy arrived in London this evening at 8:20 p.m. Air Force One landed at London Airport North after the flight from Vienna.
They were welcomed by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.
In a short airport speech, JFK said that 2 of his sisters are married to Englishmen.
He also said that tomorrow when he attends the baptism of Jackie's sister's child, he will become a godfather. (Jackie's sister is Princess Lee Radziwill.)
Today the President & PM will discuss the USSR & its intentions in Berlin & Laos as well as nuclear testing & disarmament.

JFK & KHRUSHCHEV AGREE ON LAOS
As they concluded their 2 day summit conference in Vienna, Austria today, President Kennedy & Nikita Khrushchev agreed to support a neutral & independent Laos.
President Eisenhower told JFK on the day before the inaugural that Laos "is the key to....Southeast Asia".*
*A conference meeting in Geneva in July 1962 agreed to preserve Laotian neutrality.

PRESIDENT SPEAKS TO THE WORLD FOOD CONGRESS
President John F. Kennedy spoke to the World Food Congress today. He said:
"So long as freedom from hunger is only half achieved....no nation can afford to be satisfied."
He continued:
"We have the ability....to eliminate hunger from the face of the earth....We only need the will."

JFK TALKS ABOUT LABOR RACKETEERING
Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts attacked employers today for aiding labor racketeering.
He was speaking to the New Jersey Federation of Labor.
The Senator said that some employers collaborate with labor racketeers to drive out competition & build monopolies.

PATRICIA KENNEDY GRADUATES COLLEGE
The 6th child of Ambassador Joseph P. & Rose Kennedy, Patricia, graduated from Rosemont College today with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

CONGRESS PASSES WOMENS SUFFRAGE AMENDMENT
The proposed 19th Amendment to the US Constitution which would grant the right to vote to women passed the Congress of the United States today.
The amendment now goes to the states for ratification. Two-thirds of the states must ratify for the amendment to become law.*
*On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment thus making the mark of 2/3 of all states to ratify. Check back to JFK+50 on August 18 for the complete story of Tennessee's vote on the 19th amendment.

MASSACRE IN TIANANMEN SQUARE
Thousands of pro-democracy student-protesters were killed or arrested today by Red Chinese troops in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
Since last month, nearly a million young Chinese students have been actively protesting against their communist leaders.
It is estimated that as many as 300 students have died & as many as 10,000 arrested.*
*Three weeks later, the US Congress votes to impose economic sanctions against the PRC.
