JFK PROCLAIMS YEAR LONG CELEBRATION OF EMANCIPATION
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) January 1, 1963 marked the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's signing of the final Emancipation Proclamation at the White House here in the Nation's Capital.
The Emancipation proclaimed...
"That on the 1st day of January, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred & sixty three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, & forever free."
President John F. Kennedy's Proclamation 3511 dated December 28, 1962 stated...
"I, John F. Kennedy, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the Emancipation Proclamation our Nation's policy, rounded on justice and morality, and that it is fitting and proper to commemorate the centennial of the historic Emancipation Proclamation throughout the year 1963."
