I THINK I SHALL NEVER SEE A POEM LOVELY AS A TREE

POET/SOLDIER JOYCE KILMER KILLED IN ACTION

The Western Front (JFK+50) On July 30, 1918, Sgt. Alfred Joyce Kilmer* was shot and killed by a German sniper as he was scouting ahead of his American division to locate enemy machine gun nests.  Kilmer's death occurred near the Ourcq River**.

Kilmer, 31 years old, was awarded the Croix de Guerre by France.  A graduate of Columbia, he was a prolific poet whose most famous lines are...

"I think I shall never see
 A poem lovely as a tree
 Poems are made by fools like me
 But only God can make a tree."

*Alfred Joyce Kilmer ((1886-1918) was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey & graduated from Columbia University in 1908.  AJK became a feature writer for the New York Times.  During WWI, he served in the 69th infantry division.

**Ourcq River is an 87 kilometer tributary of the Marne River located in France.
