ADDRESS AT THE BOLSHOI THEATRE

LENIN PROPOSES RESPONSE TO SOVIET FOOD CRISIS

Moscow (JFK+50) On January 17, 1919, Vladimir Lenin* spoke at the Bolshoi Theatre** here in Moscow on the critical food shortage in the Soviet Union.  The address was given to a Joint Session of the All-Russia Central Executive Committee, the Moscow Soviet and All-Russian Trade Union Congress.

Lenin proposed the introduction of a state monopoly on staples including grain, tea, salt and sugar.  Meat and seafood were to be procured by the Food Commissar at fixed prices.

Lenin's proposals were unanimously approved and endorsed by the Council of People's Commisarrs on January 21st.

*Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924) was born in Simbirsk to a Russian schoolmaster. He studied law at Kazan University but was expelled for taking part in student protests.  VL graduated from St. Petersburg University, passed the bar & began a law practice. He formed "The Union for the Liberation of the Working Class" in 1895 but was forced to leave Russia for 17 years.  In Switzerland, he established a Bolshevik newspaper titled "PRAVDA" or "TRUTH" & returned to Russia in 1917 to lead the revolution.  Arriving at the train station in Moscow, Lenin said: "Hail to the global socialist revolution!"

**Bolshoi Theatre was designed by Joseph Bove & holds ballet & opera performances.  The Bolshoi Ballet & Opera are world renowned.  The building was re-opened in 2011 after a 6 year renovation.
