"SOVIET LEADER MAY BE IMMUNE TO NOISES"

LENIN'S SLEEPING ROOM AT KREMLIN LINED WITH CORK

Moscow, U.S.S.R. (JFK+50) On October 5, 1922, the Evening Star reports that "the walls of Nikolai Lenin*'s sleeping room in the Kremlin** have been lined with cork***."

The purpose of this installation, according to the Star's reporting, is so Comrade Lenin "may be immune to noises."

Lenin must also have an aversion to crowded elevators because a private elevator to his apartment has also been installed.

*Vladimir Lenin, born Vladimir Ulyanov (1870-1924) was born in Simbirsk, Russia & became leader of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 & founder/head of the Russian Communist Party, 1917-1924.

**Kremlin (fortress inside a city) built 1482-1495 includes 5 palaces & 4 cathedrals.  The K overlooks the Moskva River & Red Square.

***cork wall panels absorb, reduce noise & is often used in musical recording studios because of its excellent sound absorption.

JFK+50 NOTE

According to Yekaterina Sinelschikova, 'Lenin' was 1 of 150 monikers used by the founder of the Russian Communist Party.  Apparently there are a number of differing opinions on how he came up with the name.

CONSOLIDATION OF RUSSIA, BELORUSSIA, UKRAINE & TRANSCAUCASIAN FEDERATION

SOVIET UNION ESTABLISHED AS A COMMUNIST STATE

Moscow (JFK+50) On December 30, 1922, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was established consolidating Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine and the Transcaucasian Federation into a single communist state.

The Soviet Union's creation came as a result of the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II and a three year civil war in which the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin* struggled to establish a coalition of workers and soldiers committees.

With the establishment of the USSR, Vladimir Lenin became premier and served until his death in 1924.  After Lenin's death, Joseph Stalin came to power and the USSR became a Marxist-Leninist state with a centrally planned economy.  Nikita Khrushchev followed Stalin in the 1950s as the COLD WAR heated up.

The struggle between the two superpowers culminated in the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 in which JFK and Khrushchev reached a mutually accepted solution, thus narrowly averting nuclear war.

*Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924) was born in Simbirsk to a Russian schoolmaster. He studied law at Kazan University but was expelled for taking part in student protests.  He graduated from St. Petersburg University, passed the bar & began a law practice.

Lenin formed "The Union for the Liberation of the Working Class" in 1895 but was forced to leave Russia for 17 years.
In Switzerland, he established a Bolshevik newspaper titled "PRAVDA" or "TRUTH" & returned to Russia in 1917 to lead the revolution.

CONSIDERED A TRAITOR TO THE REVOLUTION

LENIN SHOT 100 YEARS AGO TODAY

Moscow, U.S.S.R.(JFK+50) On August 30, 1918 an assassination attempt was made on Vladimir Lenin here in Moscow.  The Soviet leader, who had just completed a speech at the Hammer & Sickle arms factory, was walking to his car when three shots rang out.

One shot passed through Lenin's neck and a second punctured his lung.  While the Soviet leader survived, he never fully recovered from the attack.

The would-be assassin was Soviet Revolutionary party member Fanny Yefimovna Kaplan*.  She was disillusioned with Lenin and considered him "a traitor to the revolution."

*Fanny Yefimovna Kaplan (1890-1918) became a political revolutionary & joined the Socialist Revolutionary Party.  She was arrested at the age of 16 for her involvement in a terrorist bomb plot & served time in prison.  FYK was executed on Sept. 3, 1918.

JFK CALLS FOR PEACE & PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On June 10, 1963, President John F. Kennedy gave the commencement address at American University in the Nation's Capitol.

In his speech, JFK called for world peace & paid tribute to the Russian people.

He said:

"Let us reexamine our attitudes toward the Soviet Union.

No government or social system is so evil that its people must be considered lacking in virtue.

As Americans, we find communism profoundly repugnant as a negation of personal freedom & dignity.

But we can still hail the Russian people for their many achievements in science & space, in economic & industrial growth, in culture, (and) in acts of personal courage."
