"OUR GREATEST DEBT GOES TO ITALY FROM WHICH SO MUCH INSPIRATION FOR MUSIC HAS COME"

JFK SPEAKS TO SCHOLA CANTORUM OF UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) At noon on September 4, 1962, President John F. Kennedy addressed members of the Schola Cantorum* of the University of Arkansas in the Rose Garden at the White House.

The President, accompanied by Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright, complimented the group on their "very unusual and difficult kind of singing, which places great stress upon...self-discipline, and also on your cooperation with your fellows."

JFK also said "our greatest debt goes...to Italy, from which so much of our inspiration for music has come."

The group performed their full program at the new Senate Office Building later in the day.
