"A NATIONWIDE CELEBRATION IS JUST DAYS AWAY"

STATE OFFICIALS RESTRAINED FROM TAKING ACTION ON 19TH AMENDMENT

Nashville, Tennessee (JFK+50) The fight for woman's suffrage continued in the Davidson County Court House* on August 23, 1920 as state officials were restrained by Chancery Court from "taking any actions leading to official certification of Tennessee's ratification" of the 19th Amendment.

Thirty-seven legislators remained in Alabama in hopes of overturning passage of the Susan B. Anthony Amendment passed by the Tennessee House five days earlier.  They issued a statement which read...

"We believe the majority of the people of Tennessee do not favor the ratification of said amendment."

Although most suffrage workers had left Nashville, Carrie Chapman Catt remained at her headquarters at the Hermitage Hotel.

Despite the delay of official certification, David Dismore writes "a nationwide celebration is just days away."

*Davidson County Court House, built 1936-37, houses Nashville's City Hall & offices of the Mayor & City Council.  The 8 story frame building is made of Indiana limestone.
